The unitless value of the coupling coefficient k for a strongly-coupled multi-winding transformer (or a coupled inductor) can be approximately calculated with the equation as below.

where: $L_{open}$ - inductance (H) of the first winding measured with the other windings open-circuited, $L_{short}$ - inductance (H) of the first winding measured with the other windings short-circuited. | ||
Note: This equation is valid only for strongly-coupled windings (relatively low leakage inductance). As per [1], the Lshort value represents the resulting inductance which strictly speaking is not the leakage inductance. The calculation is more accurate if the primary and secondary inductances are equal. |
