Recording of Barkhausen noise made on single Epstein strip of conventional grain-oriented electrical steel. The search coil had 500 turns wound across 40 mm. The sample (without any magnetic yoke) was magnetised by a permanent magnet manually moved closer and farther from the sample.

The round point on the hysteresis loop shows the approximate state of the magnetised sample.

The noise (including the background noise) reduces significantly when the material is saturated. The highest noise activity is when the excitation transitions through the highest permeability.
