A convention for finding which end of a current loop or a solenoid can be associated which magnetic pole. If current flows anticlockwise when looking at the loop then this is the north pole. Conversely, when looking at the loop the current flows clockwise then this is the south pole. Current flow is in the electrical sense (the actual electron flow is in opposite direction).
