Analytical calculations - type of calculations that can be performed by using equations or expressions that can be derived or approximated from other equations.
For example, an equation for power loss dissipated on a resistor with a fixed value can be calculated by hand or by calculator:

However, in a general case for variable current such simple calculation is no longer possible with simple analytical formulae. It might be thus necessary to employ numerical methods such as SPICE or finite-element modelling1) which allow calculations via successive approximation of the various physical processes.
