Type test - a safety test (or a series of tests) whose purpose is to prove that the design and construction of a given device fulfils a given safety standard.1)
For example, in the IEC 61010 Safety requirements for electrical equipment for measurement, control, and laboratory use the type test is defined as:2)
TYPE TEST - test of one or more samples of equipment (or parts of equipment) made to a particular design, to show that the design and construction meet one or more requirements of this standard

From the viewpoint of IEC 61010 a type test involves for example exposing the main electrical insulation component to overvoltage as dictated by the standard. The insulation must not get damaged after such tests. The level of overvoltage applied during a type test is typically higher than for the routine test.
